Understanding Players: Episode One Now Published

Dear fellow sojourners,

Hence begins the journey towards Understanding Players.

Aetherborne Creations has published Episode One of Understanding Players, a short video series exploring player motivation, game design, and the experiences that games are built to create.

The first episode begins with a simple question:

Why do players play?

Games are often described as “fun,” but that word can hold many different kinds of satisfaction. One player may seek mastery. Another may seek story, connection, discovery, conflict, restoration, or the pleasure of making something with their own hands.

Episode One introduces the foundation of a practical framework for thinking about player satisfaction, and why understanding motivation matters when designing meaningful play.

In our previous Memoirs, we spoke of new worlds ahead in digital storytelling, and of the studio’s movement beyond literature and the spoken word into games, narrative worlds, and edutainment. Understanding Players is one of the first public steps along that path: a way to give clearer language to the experiences games are built to create.

What the Series Will Explore

Future episodes are planned to explore how player motivation shifts by context, before moving through recurring forms of satisfaction such as mastery, agency, social connection, immersion, discovery, creation, conflict, and restoration. Later entries will also consider how these motivations can clash, and how they can be used as a practical design lens.

A Design Lens for What Comes Next

The series will also serve the studio’s broader work. As Aetherborne Creations continues developing its approach to games, creative systems, educational play, and review pieces, Understanding Players will provide a framework for asking better questions: what kind of satisfaction is being created, for whom it is intended, and whether the design truly supports that experience.

Episode One may also be viewed directly on YouTube.

For Developers and Studios

As Understanding Players develops, Aetherborne Creations will also begin applying this lens to selected games, demos, and creative works through future reflections and review pieces.

For developers, studios, and creators who feel their work may sit naturally within this kind of thoughtful design-led discussion, we welcome considered enquiries through our collaboration page.

Where there is alignment in tone, purpose, and creative direction, there may be scope for future coverage, commentary, or broader collaboration.
